Tackle twill was also mentioned in the Fall Fashions raincoat I posted here. "A tough fabric invented and patented by R. J. Liebe. It was originally used for American football pants. As newer fabrics were created and tackle twill was replaced with other materials such as Lycra, its primary use became lettering (name and number embroidery), as on athletic apparel." And from a website dealing with vintage fabrics, Tackle Twill is "a twill rayon and cotton fabric used for sportswear and uniforms."
